Becoming a Citizen or Permanent Resident in the UK: A To-Do List

General English Course

You have the necessary paperwork. Based on your current status, you have already become eligible to apply as a citizen or a permanent resident of the United Kingdom. What next? What are the things you must do to obtain that much sought-after UK citizenship or permanent residency status?

We have identified some of the steps and practices that you have to undergo to improve your legal status in the UK! Let us go through them one by one —

1. Pass the Secure English Language Test (SELT)

The SELT is the official assessment recognised by the UK Home Office to prove that foreign nationals who wish to assimilate into the British society and way of life are equipped with the necessary English language proficiency and abilities. This test assesses the aspiring applicant’s listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills, and is a required tool for UK visa and citizenship applications.

Your Language School now offers English for British Citizenship courses, perfect to help you ace the SELT! The classes under this new course offering are administered to help improve one’s English skills specifically for the SELT, and these sessions, of course, come with expert tips on how to successfully conquer the test and all the possibilities that may arise during the test proper.

2. Get 75% in the Life in the UK Test

The Life in the UK Test is a 24-item exam that aims to measure how much you know about the UK and all its facets, in order to ascertain that you are, indeed, ready to become a UK citizen or permanent resident. It covers many aspects of British history, principles, geography, government, and more.

Preparing for this assessment is no simple task. While the government agency in charge of citizenship and living in the UK has made available an official handbook for the Life in the UK Test, which you can get as a book, an eBook, or in audio format, this exam requires an extensive knowledge of several aspects of the United Kingdom that will be condensed into a 24-item test.

Fortunately, Your Language School now offers a special Life in the UK course! This new course gives students expert insights on everything a foreign national needs to know to further his or her citizenship or permanent resident application with respect to the Life in the UK Test. Enroling in these classes would be a great complement to the knowledge you will acquire from the official handbook, as we go above and beyond the topics found in that government-issued material. Test taking tips most definitely included, too!

Our highly qualified Life in the UK instructor, Diane, is looking forward to having more students in her class. Sign up here!

Also, watch out for our next post! In our next blog, we will comprehensively discuss the Life in the UK Test, which aims to substantially help aspiring candidates know what to expect and how to prepare for this assessment.

3. Find out your English level

This is another important step to complete your UK citizenship or permanent residency application. Finding out your CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) level is necessary because an eligible foreign national is able to take the above-mentioned assessments only if he or she possesses the minimum CEFR level required per test type.

For instance, in order for an eligible non-native to be allowed to take the SELT for an ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain, which is the official term for British Settlement/Permanent Residency), he or she must first have a B1 English level. A CEFR Certificate must be presented to prove that you have taken and passed a test at this level (or higher), which you can get at any recognised centre.

Not sure where to start? Check out our website for a quick and free grammar test! Our 10-minute English Quiz more or less gauges your CEFR English level, which would then guide you on whether to take the necessary English courses for improvement, and which English skills you may need some help on.
