Perfect for university students who are looking to improve their Academic English skills, the English for Academic Purposes or EAP is an intensive small-group course that focuses on developing the learner’s language skills necessary for academic study in any esteemed university in the UK and any English-speaking country across the world.
This is not to say, however, that we are only accepting presently-enroled university students in this newly offered programme. Apart from university students, Your Language School’s EAP classes are open to registrants who are still planning to apply for a slot at any university and just wish to have a head start at EAP. Certainly, hunger for learning and desire for self-improvement are more than enough reasons to join and be part of our EAP courses!
Currently, Your Language School offers two options for the EAP courses, both of which run for 8 weeks. If you wish to focus on Academic Writing and Academic Speaking, we have an 8-week course that targets these skills, which you can enrol in by clicking this link. What are some of the activities included in the EAP Courses?
As the EAP targets Academic English skills, the learning activities involved are especially tailored to prepare the student for an intensive study in higher education. Some of these activities are:
- Writing reports, academic essays, and commentaries: Studying in an esteemed university in the UK, or in any country for that matter, entails a lot of writing, and these writing assignments demand different writing styles, formats, and research. Our EAP Courses will train you to use the appropriate writing style for each writing objective, and, in the process, learn how to effectively convey your message through written word.
- Listening to seminars, academic lectures, and discourses: In the academic world, listening to speakers and various learning materials is one of the most common ways to gain new information and retain knowledge. With these activities, we will not only train you to merely listen; the primary goal is for the student to be able to follow the lectures from start to finish, digest the acquired information, make useful notes, among others. Listening comprehension is highly important, and this is what we target for this set of listening activities.
- Giving presentations, speeches, and insightful exchanges: These activities target one’s Academic Speaking, so that the student is able to properly and effectively communicate to the audience his or her points and message orally. Of course, apart from being able to speak excellently using Academic English, this set of speaking activities aims to build confidence among each and every learner.
- Reading key texts, academic materials, and articles: While it is acknowledged that reading is something that has already been mastered during one’s younger years, Academic Reading demands a higher level of skill. Here, you will be trained to read different academic materials, adopt different reading strategies for different reading purposes, as well as develop critical thinking skills for every text read–all to ensure that the learner is ready for an intensive study in higher education, regardless which university he or she is enroled or intends to enrol.
How are the EAP Courses different from the other English Courses offered?
Essentially, Your Language School’s EAP Courses are meticulously designed to develop and further improve the learner’s Academic English and study skills during or before starting their degree in a university. As discussed above, this programme entails more rigorous and intensive learning activities, all of which simulate actual tasks and assessments in higher education.
If you have already enroled in any English Course, our EAP Courses are a great complement to your learnings and experiences from the previous course, especially if you are a university student or are planning to apply for admission to a university.
